1. Background of the Second Anglo-Mysore War
The Second Anglo-Mysore War (1780–1784) was fought between the Kingdom of Mysore and the British East India Company. The conflict arose because the British sought to expand their influence in South India, while Mysore aimed to protect its independence. After the First Anglo-Mysore War, tensions remained unresolved, and both sides distrusted each other. Mysore, under Hyder Ali and later Tipu Sultan, had become a powerful military state. The British feared this growing strength and attempted to weaken Mysore through alliances and political pressure. These tensions eventually escalated into a major war across South India.
2. Beginning of the War
The war began in 1780 when Hyder Ali, supported by Mysorean forces and later by Tipu Sultan, launched a large-scale campaign against the British. The British had formed alliances with regional powers, including the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Marathas, creating political tensions. In response, Mysore launched swift attacks to challenge British influence in the Carnatic region. The conflict quickly expanded into one of the largest wars in South India during the eighteenth century. Both sides mobilized large armies, and fierce battles followed. The war demonstrated Mysore’s determination to resist British expansion and defend its sovereignty.
