1. Alauddin Khilji’s Interest in Chittorgarh
In 1303 CE, Alauddin Khilji, the Sultan of Delhi, turned his attention toward Chittorgarh, the capital of Mewar. Chittorgarh was renowned for its strategic importance, wealth, and strong fortifications. Popular legends also associate Khilji’s campaign with stories about the beauty of Queen Padmini, though historians debate the authenticity of these accounts. 2. Siege and Deception
Alauddin Khilji laid siege to the mighty Chittorgarh Fort, surrounding it with his forces for several months. The defenders resisted bravely despite shortages and constant pressure. According to later traditions, Khilji sought to see Queen Padmini and was allowed only a glimpse of her reflection in a mirror.
